The Center is excited to release a new interactive database, Trends in Special Education in Charter and Traditional Public Schools by U.S. State. This tool combines our prior interactive report on the status of special education in public schools across the U.S. (a visual representation of data from our 2015-2016 secondary analysis of the Civil Rights Data Collection) with updated data from our previously released Charter School Special Education Finance Project. This new interactive database features data points at both the national level and state levels, including the numbers of charter and traditional public schools, enrollment of students with disabilities in charter and traditional public schools under IDEA and Section 504, and schools’ Local Education Agency (LEA) status and authorizer type. It also explores suspension rates of students with and without disabilities in charter and traditional public schools, as well as funding for special education and related services.
In the next month, the Center will release another in-depth brief on insights gained from the CRDC data presented in this visualization. Our first brief, which explores the underlying factors that influence families’ decisions to enroll their children in charter schools, as well as recommended actions for improving access and outcomes for students with disabilities in charter schools, is available now.
