CLE senior director of policy, Wendy Tucker was quoted in Education Week‘s article titled “L.A. Agrees to Do More After Failing on Special Education. Could Other Districts Be Next?” on April 29, 2022. The article explores findings released by federal officials, indicating that during the COVID-19 pandemic the Los Angeles Unified School District failed to meet the needs of students with disabilities. As a result of these findings the school district agreed to implement a plan that would remedy the findings in the report, in addition to assessing the tools students with disabilities to move forward in their education. Tucker provided EdWeek with insight from a legal perspective:
“If I’m going to be hopeful, I would be hopeful that there will be less of these agreements coming out because districts are doing the right thing on the front end. If I’m being realistic, I would expect that we would see more of these. I think the Department of Education is not playing. The office for civil rights is taking this very seriously.”
